Since it's not there, that suggests the new HDD is is not working at all. In other versions of Windows, you can right-click on "My Computer" or "This PC", click on Manage, and then click on the Disk Management entry on the left. When the process is complete, back out of Disk Management and reboot. I'm in NO way condemning his choice or thoughts on that.
